COVID-19 Reporting Challenges Highlight the Importance of Normalized, Complete Clinical Data to Help Save Lives
How improving the quality and interoperability of clinical data will avoid the next public health reporting breakdown
Many challenges and breakdowns were responsible for a disjointed pandemic response, and countless unnecessary deaths, illnesses and billions of dollars in costs. According to a six-month investigation of 25 states conducted by Politico, COVID reporting data from labs varied widely in terms of format and quality. This was a key contributor to the delays on the part of state public health agencies in loading and interpreting test data, hampering their ability to mount timely and appropriate public health responses.
Diameter Health has first-hand knowledge of the wide variation in data quality and its impact on pandemic response through our work with government, state and regional health information exchanges and other aggregators. Our experience tells us that we can prepare for a data-driven response to whatever comes next by strengthening standards and applying automation to cleanse, normalize and enrich lab and other clinical data.
